Tallinn
can be reached of course by car, boat -ferry-, train and airplane.
However, air travel has in general been recommended to be
the best way to reach Tallinn. |

ferries except Linda Line dock at Reisisadam
port, to the north of the center.) |
|
(Estonian
rail is a cocktail of private companies and
subcontractors which could make it fairly hard
to get around by train.) |

One
should check out the main draws in Tallinn, which include
Toompea Castle (Toompea Hill) whose 1773 provenance is
actually pretty modern for this part of town; Alexander
Nevski Cathedral (Palace Square, 8 a.m. - 6 p.m. daily)
was built in the late 19th century in the style of
Russia's 17th century Orthodox churches; and Toomkirk
Cathedral (Palace Square, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday -
Saturday). Kiek in de Kok (1 Komandiandi Tee, 10:30 a.m. -
4:30 p.m. except Monday), a tall cannon tower, offers a
visual perspective. Also theTown Hall Square; it is lined
by numerous cafes and winding streets and full of
boutique-style shops. Town Square was developed in the
14th century and its near perfect preservation is almost
eerie -- yet incredibly beautiful. Next, Kadriog that was
built as a summer residence by Peter the Great for Tsarina
Catherine; it's now a gallery of paintings and located in
the midst of a gorgeous seaside park. Interesting to visit
could be also the Estonian Open-Air Museum that lies on the
peninsula of Rocca-al-Mare, 25 minutes' taxi drive west of
the city center. The park consists of a range of wood
mills, houses and other structures dating back to the 17th
century.

Shopping:
|
For
shopping, aim for Viru Street, which has the city's best
collection of boutiques. Recommended as tourists'
souvenirs are usually the handmade
wool sweaters or the sophisticated glass art.
|
|
Internet:
|
Kohvik
Grill (Vana-Viru) offers cafe food and Internet-tapped
computers.

Casually:

There
are plenty of pubs and cafes in the old town. For local
atmosphere there's Von Krahli Baar (Rataskaevu 10-12, open
daily from 11 a.m.) and Kloostri Ait (Vene 14, from noon -
midnight). Kuldse Notsu Korts (The Little Piggy Inn,
Dunkri 8, from noon - midnight) has tons of atmosphere --
not to mention a roaring fireplace -- and funky food, like
beer soup with ice cream and sauna-smoked lamb leg. For an
upscale lunch featuring Estonian cuisine go to Vanaema
Juures (Rataskaevu 10, noon - 10 p.m. Monday - Saturday,
noon - six Sunday).
